Where to Stay in Marrakech

Marrakech has neighbourhoods to suit every kind of traveller. Whether you want the heart of the medina or a quieter modern district, your choice of base shapes the whole experience.

Where to stay in Marrakech neighbourhoods

The city of Marrakech is not one place but several distinct neighbourhoods, each with a different feel and a different set of advantages. Choosing where to stay is one of the most important decisions you will make before your trip, and it is worth thinking through before you book.

The Medina: Stay in the Heart of Marrakech

The medina is the old walled city of Marrakech. Staying here puts you within walking distance of the major souks, Djemaa el-Fna square, the main mosques, and most of the historic sights. The trade-off is noise, narrow alleyways that can be hard to navigate, and the fact that cars cannot reach most riad doors.

Riads – traditional Moroccan courtyard houses – are the signature accommodation in the medina. They range from budget guesthouses to lavish boutique hotels with rooftop terraces and plunge pools. The best ones offer a genuine escape from the bustle of the streets outside.

The medina is the right choice if you want to be immersed in the city and do not mind some complexity in getting to your door.

Gueliz: Modern Comfort and Easy Access

Gueliz is the modern district of Marrakech, developed during the French colonial period. It has wide boulevards, international restaurants, contemporary shops, and a mix of hotels from budget to boutique. Getting around is easier here – taxis and car parks are accessible, and the streets are laid out on a grid.

The downside is that Gueliz lacks the atmosphere of the medina. It feels more like a Mediterranean city than a Moroccan one, which for some visitors is exactly what they want after a day in the old city.

Hivernage: Luxury Hotels and Evening Entertainment

Hivernage is the upscale hotel district, just south of Gueliz and adjacent to the medina walls. The largest five-star hotels are concentrated here, along with the main nightlife venues. If you are prioritising a large pool, a spa, multiple restaurants, and the option to walk to the medina, Hivernage is a strong choice for luxury travellers.

Riads vs Hotels: Which Is Right for You?

This is the most common question for first-time visitors. A riad offers a more personal, atmospheric experience – typically a family-run guesthouse or small boutique hotel with a courtyard, exceptional breakfasts, and staff who know the city well. A large hotel offers more consistent amenities, a swimming pool, international standards of service, and easier logistics.
